LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of the course, delegates should be able to :

• Demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a fire team leader.
• Put into practice the principles of leadership and decision making, in an emergency.
• Deliver a pre-prepared lesson presentation to a small group of students.
• Describe the relevant and current fire, emergency response safety requirements.
• Appropriate the need for, and design, a structured training programme for industrial fire teams.

CONTENT

This course is primarily practical.

An introduction to fire, emergency response and safety requirements – in relation to industry, and the need for an effective system of fire routines and emergency plans.

Methods of instruction – an interactive session covering the considerations for lesson planning, preparation and presentation.

Breathing apparatus set familiarization and maintenance – an introduction to the working and routine testing and maintenance of a full duration breathing apparatus set, and an escape set.

Fire Team Leader – Practical exercises, a chance to put into practice the principles of leadership, planning and control, covered in the classroom, during practical tasks involving team building.

Safety on the fire ground – an interactive discussion of the hazards to be considered, when committing emergency crews in action. Video presentation on fire fighter safety.

Decision Making – Communication; briefing skills; a session to underline the elements of individual and group decision making, when working to solve problems.  Includes the use of practical exercises.

Crew Command drills – Practical session, to give input on the use of pumps and fire fighting equipment. An opportunity to develop command skills during practical training.

Lesson Presentations – Students present a short micro-lesson on a fire related topic; preparation should take place before course attendance.

Team Leadership and crew command exercise – the techniques of fire fighting pressure-fed hydrocarbon fires, as a development tool.

BA Exercises – full duration BA sets are used to familiarize students with working in conditions of heat, smoke and darkness, developing skills in search and rescue techniques and fire fighting.  A further opportunity to develop leadership and control skills, this time with internal fire fighting crews.

PRESENTATION

Through a series of lectures, demonstrations and realistic practical exercises with interactive debriefs.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

• All delegates attending this course should be medically fit to undertake breathing apparatus training.
• Delegates undergoing training for work in confined spaces should not suffer from claustrophobia, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and epilepsy or have impairment of vision to the degree that they would not be able to see sufficiently well without the use of glasses.
• Beards: Beards or other facial hair may prevent an effective seal being formed between face and face mask when wearing breathing apparatus.  For reasons of health and safety, delegates with beards cannot be admitted to courses which involve the wearing  of breathing apparatus.
