BASIC AVIATION RESCUE & FIRE FIGHTING COURSE - BARFF

The BARFF course is specifically designed to satisfy the development needs of emergency response personnel serving on a Category Three to Five Airfield, according to International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) Annex 14: Airport Services Manual Part 1, (Rescue and Fire Fighting), and as required by Libya Civil Aviation Authority. AFF1-12 of CAP 699 & LYCAP 139.

Aims & Objectives: The course aims to prepare the delegates to safely and competently carry out the duties of a member of an emergency response team for a Category Three to Five airfield. Successful delivery is achieved through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, practical fire ground exercises, interactive debriefs and syndicate work. 

On successful completion of the course, delegates will have a working knowledge  

of:  

  • Aircraft construction. 
  • Airport familiarisation. 
  • Aircraft familiarisation. 
  • Rescue and firefighting personnel safety. 
  • Emergency communications systems on the aerodrome, including aircraft-related alarms. 
  • Use of the fire hoses, nozzles, turrets and other appliances. 
  • Application of extinguishing agents. 
  • Emergency aircraft evacuation assistance. 
  • Firefighting operations. 
  • Adaptation and use of structural rescue and firefighting equipment for aircraft rescue and firefighting. 
  • Dangerous goods. 
  • Familiarisation with fire fighter’s duties under the aerodrome emergency plan. 
  • Protective clothing and respiratory protection. 
  • Aviation Legislation. 
  • Internal/External firefighting techniques. 
  • Evacuation procedures. 
  • Incidents on and off the airport. 

More Information

Practical: Following a series of explanations, demonstrations and opportunities to practice, delegates will be assessed against the competence standards relating to the practical elements of all exercises according to the lesson plan. Delegates will also be assessed against requirements of the occupational standards in AFF1-12 of CAP 699 & LYCAP 139 accordingly. 

 

Assessment: Delegates will be assessed against the learning outcomes specified in section A.5 using direct observation and oral and/or written questions as appropriate. Delegates in possession of a ‘successfully completed’ competency level, will be required to attend a 1-week Revalidation training course to revalidate their competence as a firefighter, every 2 years. This training will refresh the requirements of the occupational standards in AFF1 – 12 of CAP 699 & LYCAP 139.
