Industrial Breathing Protection (IBP)
This course is designed for delegates to familiarise and obtain a working knowledge of industrial Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), a type of respiratory protective equipment used by workers in various industries to ensure their safety in hazardous environments. It is designed to provide a continuous supply of breathable air to the wearer, independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Industrial SCBAs are commonly used in environments where there is a risk of oxygen deficiency, and the presence of toxic gases, smoke, or other airborne contaminants. Industries that utilize SCBAs include chemical plants, oil refineries, and confined space
Aims & Objectives:
Where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used as a control measure under health and safety legislation, the selected RPE must be both adequate and suitable. General advice on the selection of RPE is covered in the HSE guidance document Respiratory Protective Equipment at work: A Practical Guide (HSG53)
On completion of the course, delegates will have a working knowledge of:
The breathing process,
The different types of respiratory protection,
Air management,
The workings of a breathing apparatus set,
How to test a breathing apparatus set,
How to move safely in smoke and darkness,
The signs and effects of heat and humidity,
The need for correct breathing apparatus cleaning,
Practised and demonstrated competence,
Breathing apparatus set testing,
Breathing apparatus set wearing,
Moving in smoke and darkness,
