Skid Steer and Excavator Operators Course

This course is suitable for those operating skid steers and excavators for both experienced workers and foundation / novice level. This course is also delivered as per L.N. 293 of 2016, work Equipment (Minimum Safety & Health Requirements) Regulations, 2016 This course will be delivered in person and includes both theoretical and practical exercises.

Aims & Objectives: The aims of this course are to train delegates in the ability to safely operate a heavy plant / from a small to a mid-size excavator and skid steer loader (Bobcat), wheel loader, (Wheel Shovel), Dumper and Road Roller.

On completion of the course, delegates will have a working knowledge of:  

 

  • Compliance measures. 
  • Different variants of heavy plant and their different characteristics. 
  • Blind spots and how to keep a safe area around a heavy plant. 
  • Stability, centre of gravity, moving up and down the slope with a heavy plant (steep and uneven terrain), unbalanced loads. 
  • Loading / lifting capacity (SWL) and lifting operations (secure bucket loads). 
  • Transportation / visibility Transporting and hauling securement standards. 
  • Pre-use inspection of equipment (Daily pre-operation checks). 
  • Machine functions & controls (including safety features & requirements like mirrors, seat belts, safety bars, lift arm supports, interlocked controls / switches, rollover protective structure, lights). 
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). 
  • Safe start up and shutdown including safely entering machinery, steps, hand holds, preventing slips, trips and falls. 
  • Malfunction of machinery. 
  • Awareness of the current Health & Safety Legislation as it applies to safe operation of heavy plant. 
  • Maintenance / servicing and record keeping. 
  • Inspection / testing and certification requirements. 
  • Understanding of Risk assessment involving plant machinery. 
  • Control measures and safe work procedures, standard operating procedures (SOP). 
  • Operating in confined (restricted) spaces. 
  • Site safety.
