Course title: NFPA 1072 – Hazmat Awareness & Operator

The course is designed for personnel and first responder personnel who may be faced with a
scene involving hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction incident or emergency. This
course stresses how personnel can protect themselves, initiate proper response, recognise
hazards and apply risk-assessment techniques for Hazmat and CBRNE environments; select and
use personal protective equipment; perform basic control containment and/or confinement
operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available.

Overview of learning
 Hazmat Awareness – 1 day: Hazmat Operator – 4 days
 Introduction to Hazardous Materials
 Hazards and Risks associated with Hazardous Materials Incidents
 The role of the First Responder (Awareness Level) at a Hazardous Materials Incident
 Recognising the need for additional resources to resolve Incidents involving Hazardous Materials
 Recognising the presence of Hazardous Materials at an Incident and, if possible, identify the
materials involved
 Introduction to the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)
 Hazard Analysis
 Physical Properties of Hazardous Materials
 Hazardous Materials Risk Assessment Process
 Modes of storage and containers and the associated hazards
 Recognition and interpretation of signage and labelling for Hazardous Materials containers
 Additional sources of Hazardous Materials Information and terminology
 Interpretation of available information to inform the Risk Assessment process
 Selection and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment available to Operations Level

 Operations Level Decontamination measures
 Environmental Protection and Spill control measures
 Skill Drill – Control, Containment and Protecting Exposures
 Local Standard Operation Procedures (SOP’s) and Liaison to assist in resolving/terminating the
