TARGET GROUP:    

This programme is designed to meet the initial training and assessment requirements for Industrial Fire Team Members, particularly in high hazard industries, as identified in the relevant guidelines for Competence and Training in Emergency Response.

COURSE AIM:

To develop the skills and knowledge of delegates, whilst confirming their competence to carry out their duties as an effective member of an emergency response team.

TRAINING OUTCOMES:

Following a series of explanations, demonstrations and opportunities to practice, delegates should be able to demonstrate competence in the following areas:

  • Rescue & Firefighting operations
  • Safe use of PPE
  • Breathing Apparatus – safe use & deployment
  • Petrochemical incidents and fuel spills
  • Dealing with Emergencies
  • Have understanding of response procedures
  • Operation of fixed & portable extinguishers
  • Appliances – pumps & primers
  • Handling of FF equipment
  • Working safely in heat, smoke & darkness
  • Application of foam & foam making equipment

ASSESSMENT:

Delegates will be assessed throughout all of the practical phases, and after a sequence of mentoring sessions, an individual report will be prepared for each delegate

COURSE CONTENTS:

Maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergencies:

  • The role of the emergency response team member
  • Fire/emergency response arrangements and PPE
  • Incident planning and monitoring
  • Alarm response routines
  • Identification and location of equipment and controls

Respond to emergency and prepare to enter the incident area:

  • Uses and limitations of different types of PPE
  • Fitting, adjusting and controlling breathing apparatus
  • Pre-entry checks
  • Use of monitoring equipment
  • Procedures

Enter the incident area and work safely:

  • Gaining entrance
  • Movement strategies
  • Effects of heat, smoke, poor visibility
  • How to maintain a safe means of escape
  • BA Procedures

Rescue personnel:

  • Search techniques
  • Considerations to be taken into account when extricating trapped personnel
  • Selecting appropriate treatment for casualties
  • Choosing equipment and casualty handling techniques
  • Search & Rescue Procedures

Carry out Firefighting Operations:

  • Uses and limitations of fixed systems
  • Uses and limitations of portable systems
  • Types of foam concentrate, application techniques and equipment usage
  • Choosing and maintaining safe routes
  • Fire fighting tactics

Carry out non firefighting operations:

  • Characteristics and dangers associated with gases, fuels, chemicals and other hazardous substances
  • Choice of actions to be taken in different circumstances
  • Required stock levels and sources of supply

Maintain effective communications:

  • Lines and methods of communication
  • Communication styles
  • Procedures
